"I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me." (Psalm
13:6, KJV)
David in this psalm does a marvelous thing. He begins the Psalm with a prayer
and plea to God. He ask the questions, "How long, O Lord? Will You forget me
forever. How long will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I take
counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart daily?" It is evident that David is
anguishing and in pain, looking for and waiting for God to deliver him. Yet, by the
end of the six verses of this same Psalm, David declares, "I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me." WOW! What a powerful transition.
What a wonderful testimony of rejoicing in the Lord, "in spite of."
A few years ago, one of our noted and popular gospel recording artist and song
writers, Kirk Franklin, wrote a song entitle, THE REASON WHY I SING. The song
begins with the words, "Some may ask the question, why do we sing? When we
lift our hands to Jesus, what do we really mean. . ." The chorus of the song is, "I
sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free, His eye is on the sparrow, That's
the reason why I sing."
Like Kirk Franklin and David, we to have a reason to sing. Some may ask the
question, "With all the problems in your life, why are you singing?" Some may be
wondering, "How can you praise God with all the issues you are dealing with?"
“With everything that has and is happening this year, how can you still smile and
sing?” We even, like David in the beginning of this Psalm, may question, "Where
are you God?" "Why are you so far away from me?" Yet, when we think of all the
blessings God has bestowed upon us, we too have a reason to sing.
When trouble comes, when the storms arise in your life, even when you feel
abandoned by God, Sing! Count all the bountiful blessings God has already
bestowed upon you, and sing. Think about the goodness of God in your life, and
sing. In spite of everything happening around you, or even to you, sing. No matter
how bad things seem to be, when you think about the blessings of the Lord in your
life, you can declare like Kirk, you can testify like David, God's goodness is THE
REASON WHY I SING.
