“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together,
and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that
you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38, NKJV)
This again, is one of those verses of scripture that is most often spoken of merely
as it relates to money. You may hear this verse quoted in church during the
offering period. Yet, when Jesus speaks these words, His focus is not merely on
giving money. Indeed, Jesus is speaking of something of much more value than
money.
To rightly understand what Jesus meant when He spoke these words, we need to
read the verse preceding verse thirty-eight. In Luke 6:27-38, Jesus encourages His
listens to give. Yet He speaks of giving love, generosity, mercy and compassion,
friendship, goodness and forgiveness. Jesus informs us that we are to give all of
these attributes to others if we hope to receive them back.
Too often we wish to receive what we are not willing to give. Jesus reminds us,
“with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” In other
words, “you will reap what you sow.”
Let us be mindful to give and mindful of what we give. Let the witness of your life
be that you are a giver. As Jesus informs us, it is the givers that receive the
promise of future blessings. God delights in those who are givers and therefore
gives them more. Therefore, do not neglect giving love, mercy, compassion,
forgiveness, goodness, and friendship. And while you are giving, rejoice in
knowing that WHAT YOU GIVE, WILL BE GIVEN.
